First Day in Europe

Getting to Europe for this non terrorist savvy tourist was tres interessante. First, I had 44 kilos and was only allowed 30 on Thai Air. The check in man was kind and told me to put everything heavy in my carry on. So i cleverly put all my spices, coconut milk, sambal hot sauce and books in my carry on. Which meant i carried more than 20 kilos and looked like i had never travelled before. Then, I couldn't bring in my water bottle (and I ALWAYS carry a water bottle) as it was more than 100 ml. And they took away my sambal and coconut milk (I am going to make curries for all my hosts!) In Bangkok (and whoever designed that airport should be shot--the new one is cold in every sense of the word) they were extremely thorough (whereas in Bali the guy looking at the xrays was more interested in the latest sports scores with his buddies than contraband!). No wonder it takes forever to check in.....I took a xanax and woke up refreshed just out of Frankfurt.
At the duty free shop in Frankfurt I saw that all cigarettes have a huge SMOKING KILLS sign. See the photo (and my son smokes Luckys, unfortunately...). And there, because my shoes had buckles on them, I was thoroughly frisked. I felt guilty for nothing, the German check in guards are on some kind of power trip....at least they didn't take my curry pastes!
And then arriving in Geneva, I needed a trolley for my bags but I didn't have any euro coins (or francs, whatever they used--everyone in Asis the trolleys are free) so had to rearrange my luggage and voila! Lene was there to greet me at the airport. As well as the snow! I hadn't seen snow in literally decades. It is glorious (when one is inside). I don't like the dryness of the heated houses so much but sitting at the Fishcers' kitchen table looking out at the birdfeeder (Cardinals! Yellow bellied finches!) at the snow flakes is a wonder! And of course, cheese and chocolate for lunch. What else could one hope for? I took a four hour nap and am now hopefully on Swiss time. The kids were so excited to see me and their golden retriever, Ben, gives me his belly to scratch every time I walk by him. Thank god for fireplaces....tomorrow we go to the Alps. THE ALPS! (hey i grew up in Indiana where a hill is considered Mt Everest) and we're staying in a REAL SWISS CHALET! fancy that! I am very lucky to have such a lovely family (the Fischers) to stay with. They are taking great care of me and feeding me too much chocolate already and it's only day one (Dewi, eat your heart out!).
